The race is on. The end of the fall semester looms. Who will be the most engaged on campus? Who will suffer defeat? The competition is fierce between the top two Points earners with senior Celeste Roberson in first place with 260 points and junior Laura Wong with 246 points.
Since Points were introduced in October, students have the opportunity to attend events to earn “Points” to eventually win a prize at the end of the semester.
Also on the leaderboard are Annika Farley, Cayden Arana, and Briannalis Ruiz.
Wong said Points have motivated her and her friends to be more involved on campus with the added friendly competition with the hope of the possibilities of the mystery prize at the end of the semester. Wong’s favorite Point-scoring event was the Craft Fair.
Roberson echoed Wong saying Points have incentivized her to spend time outside of her dorm and with her friends at campus events.
However, not all events are given a Points-value. For example, Pop Culture Trivia, WQRI Open Mic Night, the Pop Up Thrift Shop, and Roger After Dark (RAD) events are not given points values.
Despite the fun Points bring for Wong and Roberson, they both believe Points can be improved for a better experience.
Wong suggested a visible leaderboard to make it feel more competitive or advertising “coveted” prizes that would make students want to participate and earn as many points as possible. Roberson suggested having more events eligible for Points instead of a select few.
Points have also helped to encourage students to attend more events but, “needs more advertising and hype,” said Wong. “I only found out about the points system because I was researching Hawklink for my RA position AND I read the Hawks Herald article about it. Other than those sources I’d heard no wind of it, or at least no memorable wind…”
Overall, Points have the top five leaders in fierce competition with the heavy campus involvements, having Wong asking, “Can I put this on my LinkedIn?”
