With a score of 1-0, Roger Williams University took the win against Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Bayside Field on Tuesday night. It was the second home game of the season and the team was thrilled with the result.

The goal was scored in the first half by freshman Josh Dion with 9:30 left on the clock.

“It feels really good, first one yet,” said Dion in reference to the goal. “Glad it was home.”

In the beginning of the game the ball was frequently kept on the defensive side for RWU, with WPI hustling fast to the ball. However, the team turned it around to offense. During the entire game, the teams consistently passed back and forth down the field and the pace picked up by the middle of the first half. There was a lot of rough play between teams throughout the night, which ended in some relatively serious injuries.

“We definitely weren’t on the ball a lot but we scored an early goal,” said senior midfielder Garrett Bolton. It was a more defensive game for Roger Williams. Bolton expressed that defense played well in the game.

“We haven’t had a clean sheet in a very long time,” commented Bolton. “It’s good to not give up a goal, especially in the first half.”

Head Coach James Greenslit also commented on the game.

“I thought that it was a really good game. They [WPI] are really difficult to play against, they don’t conceal a lot of goals.” said Greenslit. “We knew it was going to be a battle and I was really proud of our guys for stepping up and really taking on the challenge.”

The team now has their eyes set on the next game, which is at home on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 3 p.m. against Curry College.

“It’s important for us to really kind of start from the back to the front, meaning we want to keep the ball out of the net and that will always hopefully get us a chance to win.” expressed Greenslit. ‘It was a really good game, really positive results.”
