Tis the season when the colors come alive as it’ll be RWU’s blue and white seen near the top of the Conference of New England’s (CNE) playoff brackets. The team readies for their third straight year in post-season contention and currently stand in the top three of the CNE.
After falling short in the CNE tournament last season, the Hawks ready themselves for their final stretch of games standing at 17-9 (9-3 conf) as of April 21st.
The Hawks are led by Head Coach Joyce Maudie, who is in her 16th season with the team. Maudie led the Hawks to four conference championship appearances and won coach of the year back in 2013.
Maudie had coached three conference players of the year, one player in 2022, another in their 2013 championship run, and this year’s short stop, Junior Shannon Starratt. Starratt had achieved her 100th career hit earlier this season, and her efforts for the team did not stop there.
She had Started and played all the team’s first 26 games, and, in that time, she had a batting average of .403, while capturing 31 hits and three home runs off 77 at-bats. Not only has she led her team in total hits but also in total RBI’s as she has 22 thus far.
Starratt isn’t the only Hawk to break through a career milestone this season, as Senior Pitcher Raegen Germano achieved her 350th career strikeout in early April. Germano had pitched in 12 games, started 11 for the Hawks and in that time struck out 56 batters leading the team in that category.
The Hawks as a team have outscored their opponents 130-82, giving up 149 hits while the Hawks had 227 hits to this point. To this point, the Hawks have obtained a 9-1 home record and went 4-3 on the road thus far.
The Hawks have a chance to improve their road record with a trip up to Biddeford Maine this Saturday. They will take on conference opponent University of New England in a two-game series, first pitch at 12:00pm to start off the doubleheader. The Hawks regular season concludes Saturday, May 2nd in their doubleheader at Gordon.
