Women’s basketball downs Curry College 66-48 for 12th straight win
The Roger Williams University women’s basketball team defeated Curry College 66-48 for their 12th consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, staying in first-place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).
Despite an off day by the Hawks’ leading scorer in senior Mariah Nicholas (five points on 2-of-10 shooting, seven turnovers), the Hawks found contributions from all around to pace RWU to an easy victory.
Senior guard Anna Walther was the game’s high scorer with 18 points for the Hawks, while a trio of underclassmen in Gabby Jerahian, Sam Mancinelli and Sam Leone each had 10. Leone also added 10 rebounds in what was her second double-double performance of the season.
The game started with the Colonels leading the game 2-0, but a Nicholas free throw and 3-pointer by Walther gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead. The Hawks increased the lead to double digits on a triple by Jerahian, making the RWU lead 16-5 with 2:29 to go in the quarter. Curry closed the quarter on a 10-7 run in the last two minutes, however, bringing the deficit down to eight, 23-15.
In the second quarter, the Hawks stifled the Curry offense after failing to close out the first period, expanding the lead to as high as 14, 37-23, on a triple by Jerahian with 21 seconds left in the half. RWU would take that score into halftime.
For the third quarter, the Colonels got the lead down to as much as eight, but RWU pushed it back to double digits by the end of the third as they entered the fourth frame leading 51-39.
In the final 10 minutes, the Hawks stayed the course on both ends building the lead to as large as 20, eventually capturing their 12th straight win.
The Hawks improve their record to 20-3 on the year while 14-2 in the CCC, good enough for first-place in the conference. The win also improved the Hawks to 12-0 at home.
Up next: RWU plays at Gordon College (8-15, 6-10 CCC) Tuesday, Feb. 13 and hosts Endicott College (14-9, 12-4 CCC) Saturday, Feb. 17.
