On the Fly with Carol Sacchetti and Mike Gallagher

Brett Johnson, Sports Editor

We sat down with Mike Gallagher and Carol Sacchetti, co-coaches of the women’s rubgy team and full-time RWU employees, and asked them some rapid-fire questions about various subjects. Here are some of their answers:

What is your rugby title?

Mike. Carol and I, I would call us co-coaches, along with Amanda O’Brien and actually Gabby Reardon has been volunteering and helping out, so we have four coaches of the women’s rugby team right now. Carol and I started off the beginning of the season and Amanda joined us about a week and half or so into it and we’ve been working together.

Carol. Gabby is a member of the class of 2016 and Amanda is a member of the class of 2018.

Favorite thing about your job, both as coaches and faculty?

Carol. Mine’s kind of both, just being able to help out students whether it be the rugby team or clubs and orgs.

Mike. I would agree. It’s the daily interaction with students. That’s why we do what we do.

Why do you coach rugby? Why did you decide to jump on and coach rugby?

Mike. Well we both played rugby in college so we have a preexisting passion and love of the sport. I’ll say for me, the women’s rugby team has gone through a lot in the last year. They had a previous coach that was going to return to coach that team and then unfortunately, but fortunately for him, he ended up getting another full-time job, so that left the team without a coach. Given everything that the team had been through, and Carol and I have a good relationship together, we thought we wanted to show that the team was appreciated and supported and wanted to step up. As full-time employees of the University, there are things that we can do to help that team outside of just coaching and we just wanted to show them that we believe in the program, in the girls and show again that they’re supported.

Carol.  I think they have a great tradition as well, so to not be able to have a season, I don’t think either one of us would have been able to not do whatever we could do to be helpful.
