RWU Men’s Basketball claims victory over Salve Regina University

Roger Williams University Men’s Basketball earned its 14th win in a game against Salve Regina University on Feb. 5. The score was 79-74.

RWU scored the first basket of the night with a 3-point shot by sophomore guard Eli Harris and assist by freshman guard EJ Nelson. The Hawks maintained the lead for the majority of the first half, gaining up to a 7-point lead, with the Ospreys trailing close behind.

The Ospreys took a 5-point lead after a 3-point shot by sophomore forward Mikey Spencer and a jump shot by junior forward Cameron Collins, with three seconds left in the first half.

Every chance the Ospreys had to gain a lead, they would take the momentum and run with it. However, the second half became a closer game, with RWU trailing close behind or tying with Salve Regina. The first tie of the second half occurred with 13:46 left, with a good jump shot by Eli Harris.

Harris changed the fate of the game for the Hawks with just 28 seconds to go. One 3-point shot and three good foul shots in a row gave the Hawks a 3-point lead. Senior guard Bryan Donovan sealed the game with two good foul shots, with just one second left in the game.

RWU Men’s Basketball Head Coach Michael Tully commented on the team’s performance.

“We hung in there at the end of the game and with three minutes left, made plays. That’s what you got to do. Sometimes you just got to be able to do that and got to get a little luck sometimes too. But if you’re not playing defense and hanging in, luck is not going to help you,” Tully said. “It was a good win. I’ll take it.”

Eli Harris led the Hawks, with a total of 29 points scored throughout the game. Senior guard Rich Pugliese contributed with a total of 16 points.

Mikey Spencer led the Ospreys with a total of 23 points scored, along with junior guard Kevin Kelly, who scored a total of 17 points.

The final score came to 79-74, giving RWU the win.
