It is now the season when cable knit sweaters and crackling fireplaces are beginning to look very attractive to most people. But while you’re stuck inside, trying to avoid your assignments as long as possible, there comes a dilemma. What movies should you watch? And I’m not talking about that old Disney Channel Halloween movie you’ve watched 100 times, I’m talking about new movies. Don’t worry, though, I’ve already done all the hard work for you and compiled a list of new movies for you to watch this fall.
Let’s get started with one of three movies out in theaters right now it’s Twinless. This movie is about two men who meet in a support group for twins whose twin has died. If you watched Teen Wolf or Maze Runner, you’ll be happy to hear Dylan O’brien is starring in this movie. If you haven’t watched either of those, well, I guess we can’t all have good taste. If you are looking for a fun, indie queer movie, this is the one for you.
But maybe you’re a tough guy who wants an action movie to get your heart racing. In that case, I’ll have to introduce you to One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie is already making a splash in theaters as it stands apart for being a non-franchise action movie. Imagine the premise of Taken but with the tone of The Suicide Squad. This movie is fun, it is intense, and it has a wide release, so it should be easy to find in a theater near you.
Finally, in our theater darlings, there is the heartwrenching Eleanor the Great. Are your antidepressants doing too good a job? Don’t worry, this film is about an elderly woman who just lost her best friend, and her new connection with a college student will fix that right up for you. Oh, and any Scarlett Johansson fans should already know, but this is her directorial debut. Can she really do anything, or is she punching high above her weight class? You’ll have to let me know.
Now, of course, I have to mention the movies to be looking out for when they release soon. First, we are being blessed with Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein coming to Netflix on October 17th, starring Oscar Issac, Mia Goth, and that tall guy from Euphoria. If that’s too long a wait for you, which it certainly is for me, I recommend catching up on all of del Toro’s films that you might have missed. Trust me, they are all worth it, and almost all fit this spooky season.
Coming in the same week in November, we have Wicked for Good on the 21st and Wake up Dead Man (A Knives Out Story) on the 26th. Now I don’t need to pitch Wicked to anyone; it has already found its audience, but please, if you don’t listen to anything else I say, listen to this: Watch Wake up Dead Man in theaters. Don’t wait for it to come on streaming! I know all the other knives out movies went straight to streaming, and yes, this one has a really wordy title, but I mean, it’s Benoit Blanc solving the murder of a priest in New England. What could be more fall-themed than that?
