2025 is a landmark year for many culturally significant events, one of which being the Tony Award Winning Broadway Musical, Hamilton, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The hit American Musical just celebrated its 10th anniversary last month with two charity performances in the Richard Rogers Theater in New York City on August 6th. All of the funds raised went to the Immigrants: We Get The Job Done Coalition, which is a non-profit organization that supports immigrant issues. Not only that, after the original Broadway cast reunited at the 2025 Tony Awards to do a special song mash-up performance, they later announced a theatrical release of Hamilton for one day only on September 5th. Many fans did not want to “throw away their shot” and took to the theaters to view the musical on the big screen.
Hamilton is set back during the late 1700’s right in the midst of the American Revolution, and America’s early government. The musical focuses on the self-titled founding father, Alexander Hamilton and his rise and fall through establishing the country. Hamilton was portrayed by the creator of the musical itself Lin Manuel Miranda, and with a star-studded supporting cast, they were able to transform American History into something truly astounding. The musical raises the question of, “who lives, who dies, who tells your story” and Miranda wanted to leave fans with the message of, making sure you leave the legacy behind that you want.
Even 10 years later the message, and lyrical genius of Hamilton is present in the minds and hearts of fans all over the world. “I can’t believe people are still talking about it,” says Miranda in an interview with TODAY. Some of the themes in the show are more culturally significant now than they were back when the show first debuted in 2015. Miranda goes on to say, “When I wrote immigrants: we get the job done, that was like a little laugh line. Now it’s like a rallying cry.” With the ever increasing smack-down on immigration laws, a musical where the main character is an immigrant who comes to America and makes a name for himself, is something that is very relevant in today’s world. This adds to why Hamilton is still very talked about, not just in theater settings, but in school settings as well.
While social topics raise relevancy for the musical, it is ultimately the fanbase that keeps the musical so alive and talked about. The recent tiktok trend, that even got the attention of Miranda himself, as well as other actors, sparked a resurgence of Hamilton love and internet fame. The Hamilton soundtrack is continuously used and remains highly acclaimed. Original Hamilton stars even return to their iconic roles on the mainstage, like Leslie Odom Jr. returning to play Aaron Burr on September 9th. His re-run of the character will continue until November 26th, and ticket prices have already skyrocketed as fans want to see his anticipated return. It is safe to say that the Hamilton hype isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and as the next ten years unfold on the road to the 20th anniversary, there is sure to be more Hamilton surprises to come, and fans can’t “wait for it.”
