After being Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men’s track champions two years in a row, “…we definitely have a target on our back,” said Head Coach of women’s and men’s track, Maura Logan. Although a three-peat is on their mind, their goal is to “…put their team first and not just work hard for themselves but to excel for their teammates as well,” said Logan.
Nathan Tassey, three time national attender and Sam Ballowa, three time conference field athlete of the year, bring prior experience in hopes to lead to a promising start. Logan looks to Tyson Morrow, a freshman, to be a good asset to the team.
For women’s track, RWU’s Megan Purcell is a junior who is a repeat champion for the 400m and a school record holder along with Brittney Martin. Martin is a graduate student that’s been excelling in the 10k to whom Coach Logan believes is an athlete that has a lot more to give this year. They also have another incomer to look for is Natalie Reid. “Reid is gonna be sneaky in the conference,” said Logan.
Due to adding depth in event groups especially on the women’s side, Logan is hoping more than one athlete gets back to nationals this season and more of a group goes to New England’s as well. With 27 seniors leading the charge, Logan states that the experience among the team doesn’t make them complacent but instead actively pushes the team leading them to look at the question of, “…how are we going to get 1% better today each day,” said Logan.
