The Title Wave is a brand new student run magazine, written for and published by students.
It began in a Creative Writing class about literary publishing. The story behind the creation of the magazine was told by Nolan Abitabilo, “The class started off in kind of a rocky situation where most people weren’t engaged. Professor Edward Delaney… spoke to Sami Poutre and myself and told us that we should change things up this semester and become the “Head Editors” for our own publication.”
Abitabilo described the process of creating the magazine, saying that they started by making a schedule, a tool they found very helpful in the long run. This schedule informed all participants of their roles, due dates, and their plans for creating a website and publication.
“We sent out an email to all students to show everyone that we are trying to showcase the 3 best nonfiction pieces, 3 best fiction pieces, and 3 best poetry pieces from anyone on campus. After this was sent out, a couple of members and the head editors worked on creating a website, something that is still being worked through,” said Abitabilo
Sami Poutre explained students usually work on “The Mount Hope Magazine.” This year, however, their professor decided to take a more hands-on approach to publishing that would give his students a more real-life experience that would not only benefit the students who the magazine publishes, but also those who brought it to life.
Each student was assigned a specific task based on their skills. The Title Wave has talented designers who have helped create the publications logo, and the flyers (seen around GHH, MNS, CAS, and Commons, also displayed on the TVs in GHH and Commons).
“Every single student is involved in the reviewing process, as we feel that these are decisions that should be made equally. So, everyone who submits will have 14 talented eyes on their work! Even our name, The Title Wave, was created and voted on by every member of our staff. And we are very proud of that!” says Poutre.
When asked what The Title Wave’s goals are, Abitabilo responded by saying they are “Run by students, for students”, and that their mission is to showcase the most talented and creative students at RWU of all grades and majors.
For students who submit work that gets published, they hope to provide something useful for those student’s resumes, be helpful for future job opportunities, and reward writers for their hard work. Poutre similarly responded saying, “We feel that this not only gets talented Hawks a foot in the door in the publishing world, but can also open people’s eyes to a whole new talent.”
“The Mount. Hope Magazine is what sparked all of this. The main objective for this class is to learn how to edit, and usually, this class is run to help edit pieces that will be used in the Mt. Hope Magazine,” said Abitabilo about the inspiration for the magazine. “We had been inspired by how it turned out in the past, and thought this new idea would fit perfectly to get more people to be hands on and learn straight from the source.”
Poutre said the mission of Title Wave is to, “give every writer of any grade or major an equal opportunity to submit their work.”
This year, they are accepting three submissions from each category–nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.
