Is The Exorcist Scary?
Now that Halloween has come and gone, so has the time for costumes, spooky decorations and horror films. Speaking of horror films, one of my roommates and I just watched the 1973 film “The Exorcist” and, to be quite honest, it was not scary. Simply nothing that happened during the film scared us. Now I would not say I am easily scared but there are some horror films that have made me rethink the bane of my existence. I am sorry to say, this film was just not one of them.
Growing up I heard about how terrifying this film was from my parents and grandparents’ generation. However, I did not come around to watching it until about a week ago. Once I finished, I asked myself, how is this even remotely scary? The CGI and special effects were terrible and the scenes meant to be scary were hilarious. Now I understand the movie was made almost forty years ago, and this factors into the poor effects. I do, however, think the film was put together really well. I also have to remember this was made at a time when there were little to no extreme horror films like this one. It was a first for that generation, which is why it had such a strong effect on the viewers then.
This generation has become so desensitized to just about everything with the internet at our fingertips. We grew up watching way more gruesome things, just a click of a button away. Once you have seen some of the horror films made today, this film has no effect. I came to the conclusion after watching the film that it was horror for its time. However, if anyone tries watching it now after what has already been filmed and seen, it is more of a comedy. It is not a horrible movie but not scary. If you want to see the classics, then I would recommend it but just be prepared to be let down in the horror department.
