Unresolved family disputes, a mysterious death and the end of the world are only three of the persisting issues in Netflix’s newest original TV show, “The Umbrella Academy.” The plot begins with 43 individuals all born on the same day. The twist? None of the women who gave birth were pregnant. 

Once the news of this freak occurrence goes viral, Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, visits the 43 families asking to adopt their newborns. Ending up with seven, the billionaire trains six of these kids who have special powers to be heroes who call themselves The Umbrella Academy. Reginald turns out to be a cold-hearted father who only refers to his adopted kids by numbers, causing each to foster contempt for him. 

The TV series focuses on the children as grown adults reuniting to pay respect to their recently deceased father. Yet once they are together, something does not seem right. Murder is in the air. Then, things get weirder. Number five returns after disappearing for 13 years and, according to him, the world will end in eight days and he is determined to stop it. 

Overall, “The Umbrella Academy” is a show worth watching. It starts off slow and does not initially hold your attention, but after gaining a better understanding of the plot, it is more enticing to watch. If you are bored after episode three, it may be time to call it quits and move onto a different TV series. Each episode runs close to an hour, so microwave some popcorn and get comfortable because you are in for an adventure with this new show.
